teacher-student relationships

Yesterday while sitting in my Arabic language class in Nairobi, the teacher was giving examples of simple sentence structures. He quickly wrote an example on the board and continued with the lesson. This was the sentence he chose:
ضرب المعلم ظالب
“The teacher beat a student.”
None of the students in my class responded; no laughing or glances at one another…maybe that is a normal example. Either way, I decided that I sure better have all my homework done in time and that I would avoid being late to class!

Yesterday I was listening to some “old-timers” reminisce about their school days, about how they wouldn’t have dreamed of whispering or passing notes or doing any of the shenanigans people do in class these days. I wondered if part of the reason they didn’t misbehave (or didn’t remember misbehaving) was the humiliation of the knuckle-rap (or worse) with a ruler. I guess using the sample sentence “the teacher beat a student” might instill the same kind of obedience. Good luck with the Arabic!
