mount kenya | 90 days and counting

October 24th, 2007 by pww

http://www.bergbote.deOn 24 January 2007, 90 days from today, two boys from the Bolivian bush (namely my brother Davíd and myself) will set out to attempt a technical ascent of Mount Kenya, the 2nd highest peak on the African continent. Straddling the equator, she towers above the Central Kenyan highlands. The summit is actually a double peak, Batian (5,199m/17,057ft) and Nelion (5,188m/17,021ft), divided by a narrow gap called the Gate of the Mists.

Davíd is scheduled to fly into Nairobi on his birthday, 23 January, and then we will head to the mountain!

At this point we have begun physical training, researching and planning. Going over climbing route possibilities, sorting through rock and ice gear, studying the pictures and journals of previous climbers and their ascents, etc., is definitely building our excitement. We both agree that planning a mini-expedition like this is quite intoxicating!

The countdown has begun! (see timer in sidebar)
